The modern state keeps expanding, adding more rules, regulations, tax and spending, constantly seeking more control, yet services get worse. People face higher taxes, often hidden through stealth charges and inflated bills. Public money is wasted on pet projects and favoured contractors. Regulation slows business and daily life, raising costs. Even NGOs are often state bodies in disguise.

New laws and technology give governments expanding power over citizens. Vast data is collected with little oversight, from phone records to financial transactions. Soon to come digital IDs and centralised payments create single points of control over money, travel and services. A shift to a cashless economy increases the risk of exclusion or sanction. Surveillance tools such as facial recognition, GPS and connected devices steadily extend government reach.

People PACs / Super PACs (USA) and Advocacy Groups (USA & UK) for pooled funding and legal action, and social media for coordinated petitions, whistleblowing and rapid campaigns.
An example of this would be our Tax Choke initiative.

We’re promoting practical tax initiatives, including: converting salaries into limited-company contracts, coordinating a nationwide Tax Choke to pressure government reform, and running campaigns that expose the true cost of government and the hidden taxes embedded in everyday goods, services, and financial systems.

George Will’s Restoration names Core Reforms for saving the American Republic.
It's notable Will was reflecting in the decades prior to his writing the book in 1992/1993. Matters are now much worse in terms of indebtedness - 1992: about $4.0 trillion (≈65% of GDP), 2025 (projected): over $34 trillion (≈120% of GDP) corruption and dysfunction.

Social media is a tool for holding governments to account. It enables the coordination of people (see this anti digital ID campaign) and resources, for petitions and protests, turning individual concerns into organised campaigns. It supports independent reporting, podcasts and other alternative outlets which question official accounts.
